One day I found myself on a busy Saturday morning with no breakfast, no husband and no desire to cook for myself. I took my bike for a service and stopped on my way back home at a cafe I had walked past hundreds of times, and did what I almost never do: ate breakfast out.
Starkey’s on Bridge appears to be quite popular with the locals, which totally makes sense if you consider it’s the only eatery in the area that is open on a Saturday morning besides Subway and Macca’s.
I noticed there were tables in the courtyard too late. It’s way more beautiful out there, especially when you can get a bit of sunshine on your skin. I had the feeling I was the only non-local in the cafe, and thus felt too intimidated to swap tables.
The menu has standard breakfast items and several combinations for the Turkish toasties. I was tempted to get the big brekkie but the sausages were not gluten-free, so I picked the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, with no toast and avocado on the side.
Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon ($11.50 + $2.50 for the avocado)
The eggs were perfectly poached, the hollandaise was thick and well seasoned, and the avocado had been artfully sliced.
Hello, oozy yolk
I had my breakfast with a good robust long black ($3). Service was good and there are a couple other items in the menu suitable for paleo eaters (e.g. the open face omelette).
