Review: The Duke (Enmore) (2)

It had been a long time since I last visited The Duke, that iconic pub a few metres away from the Enmore Theatre. The couple of meals I had there were very average, but somehow I thought things had improved.

It was nice to be able to sit by the (real) fireplace, especially because Alvaro was a bit sick. Food has to be ordered in the kitchen, which is accessible via the half-covered courtyard, though.

Alvaro and I shared our meals as usual. The char-grilled 300g grass-fed sirloin steak served with chips and salad and your choice of sauce (none for us) was a good piece of meat with really bad sides: frozen chips (not served frozen, of course) and a bunch of leaves from a bagged salad mix.

The steak was cooked a bit more than the medium-rare ordered but I didn’t mind because it wasn’t tough.

The biggest let-down of the night was the pan-fried Atlantic salmon served with mash, asparagus and pommery crème fraiche. Once again we were served a cold and dry piece of fish, that had obviously been pre-cooked and reheated (other memorable dry fish moments: here and here). The sides, as with the other dish, were unimpressive.

Apart from the fireplace, the highlight of the night was definitely the mulled wine ($6.5 per glass), even when it was served in cheap plastic pub glasses.
