Guzman y Gomez has always been a local favourite for Newtownians. It’s cheap, it’s tasty, and it shuts down a little bit later than most eateries. I had my first taste of their food a while ago in their Kings Cross shop, and it was good. My sister wanted to buy me lunch (thanks, Gladys!) and since we were both craving Mexican food, these two Gs headed to GyG.
Gladys chose the barramundi burrito bowl, which is basically a burrito without the tortilla. The bowl is actually a styrofoam container. Your filling of choice (the fish in this case), comes with rice, cheddar cheese, black beans, and salsa; clearly a deviation from our normal diet, but at least gluten-free.

As much as I try to avoid ordering the same dish over and over again, I chose the very same meal I had the first time I went to GyG: the grilled chicken salad. I was tempted to get a burrito bowl but grains + legumes + dairy in one sitting sounded like a bad idea to me. My salad included mixed leaf lettuce, corn (which seems to be the most benign grain for me), cucumber, pico de gallo salsa and vinaigrette dressing. I had some additional guacamole and lots of hot and smokey chipotle Tabasco sauce. The whole concoction was delicious and pretty filling.

I was tempted to try one of their frozen margaritas but we went for a Campos coffee instead. If you haven’t tried Campos, what are you waiting for?

I love the barramundi at GyG – very yummy!
Love GYG – the spicy chicken is usually my pick! But I’m yet to try their margaritas…

Yeah, I know. Newtown is hard to navigate because of the eatery overload!
I always pass this place by, but if its got your approval then I’ll give it a try!
