Every time I see a new restaurant I want to try it straight away. Sadly, I almost never get to do it when it’s still “new”. On the bright side, in most cases my delay gives the business a chance to settle down and deliver more consistent meals. Today’s case is the “new” Vietnamese in the ‘hood: Pho 88. The name didn’t sound too creative, and the place didn’t look too fancy, but the expectations were met and surpassed.
Gladys, Al and I shared three mains as usual. We ordered duck “for a change”. The Vietnamese duck salad was delicious, if we didn’t have two more dishes to go, I’d have ordered a second one.

Our second dish was another Asian classic: chilli lemongrass beef, which not only had a great flavour, but super tender meat, a thing that is sometimes hard to find in that kind of dish.
Chilli lemongrass beef ($11.50)
The third dish was completely new for us, and clearly the winner of the night. The tamarind Pacific dory was well cooked and the sauce was totally addictive.
Tamarind Pacific dory ($18)
Service was excellent, very attentive and efficient. As we missed out on the Pho, I know we will be back.

That’s not like you guys to order duck – lol. Food looks great!
I’ve not even seen this place. Must go for a wander and check it out. Those three dishes sound great.
Everything looks great! Good to know they do a good job on other dishes as well as the Pho :)
I am like you, I always want to jump in and try a newly opened restaurant but never do. The dory looks really good, not something I would normally order, but after seeing the pic and your comments, is on the ‘to try’ list.
I’ve wondered what this place was like ever since they opened. Must give it a go now!
